The State of New Jersey requires the installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) on all vehicles the offender intends to operate, whether or not the individual owns the vehicles. An IID may be ordered any time a driver is convicted of driving under the influence (DUI). The courts may order an offender to install an IID during or after the period of license suspension. If an offender is ordered to install an IID and then operates a vehicle without one, one (1) year is automatically added to the amount of time the individual must use the device.
Offenders are responsible for any and all costs associated with the IID. The device must be installed, serviced, and removed by a state-approved service provider. Regular monitoring is part of New Jersey’s IID program and failure to comply with the monitoring schedule will result in additional sanctions. If an individual is ordered to install an IID after the license suspension period, the driver must submit certified proof of the device’s installation to the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) in order to have driving privileges reinstated.
